Residents of Dhekyid Lam in Phuentshogling town have raised alarms over persistent illegal and antisocial activities in their neighbourhood, including drug abuse, prostitution, gambling, and public nuisance. Concerned for their safety and the impact on local businesses, the community has turned to the police for intervention.
Many people regard Dhekyid Lam as a hotspot for drug peddling, prostitution, gambling, public nuisance and battery-related offences.
As a border town, Phuentshogling also grapples with challenges linked to cross-border movement, with numerous incidents involving individuals from the neighbouring Indian town.
The lane’s close proximity to the terminal gate makes it especially vulnerable to such activities, heightening concerns about safety and public order.
Jit Bdr, a businessman said, “The moment we say Dhekyid lane, people consider this as a place where one can get girls, alcohol and drugs. This affects our business. The residents are affected by nuisance and noise late at night. People come to this area because it is near the terminal”
Residents say running the shop late into the night is risky and insecure, especially as a woman.
Sangita Mukhia, a businesswoman said, “Many customers come to my shop asking if we provide girls for their entertainment. We always tell them we don’t. The moment people hear ‘Dhekyid Lane,’ they assume they can find such services here. This happens frequently, not just occasionally, and it makes us very uncomfortable.”
“There are many businesses here in this area, and because of one or two people, everyone is affected. Different people come here because they say that this is the area where there is prostitution, gambling, supply and abuse of drugs. This makes us feel insecure. If RBP can carry out patrolling and awareness initiatives like today, it will help clean the society here,” said Namgay Dorji, another businessman.
After repeated incidents, residents approached the police for interesidents
In response, the police stepped up patrols in the area and carried out awareness programmes on issues such as drugs, prostitution, child sexual exploitation, gambling, crime reporting, and the importance of installing CCTV cameras. These efforts aim to deter illegal activities and strengthen community cooperation.
With the festive season approaching and public celebrations expected to increase, the police have also intensified patrols across the town, placing special emphasis on entertainment centres.
Late into the night yesterday, police teams split into several groups and inspected more than 25 entertainment establishments, including karaoke bars, pubs and clubs, along with other areas identified as prone to illegal activities.
Police officials say sustained coordination between the police and residents remains vital to ensuring long-term peace and security in the area.
