To celebrate creativity, nurture talent, and ensure the continued growth of the arts, the National Art Award has honoured two outstanding artists. Their paintings emerged as the best among works submitted by 27 artists from across the country.
For years, their art spoke quietly from studios and canvases. Yesterday, it finally received national recognition.
After six years of dedicated practice, Pema Dendup was named Artist of the Year 2025 in the adult category. The award recognises his patience, observation, and commitment to artistic exploration.
His winning painting, a commander, inspired by the country’s history, earned him a cash prize of Nu 500,000.
Pema Dendup said, “It affirms the quiet work we do—the time we spend learning, observing, and experimenting. As an artist, I try to paint from lived experiences, everyday moments, and our culture and traditions. I hope this recognition inspires younger artists to believe in their voices and pursue their creative journeys with confidence.”
The jury awarded Emerging Artist of the Year to Tandin Chophel for his painting of a mask dancer, inspired by the theme of impermanence.
Judges recognised his work for its fresh and innovative perspective. He received a cash prize of Nu 70,000.
Tandin Chophel said,“I feel truly honoured to receive this National Award. It is very encouraging and inspiring. Knowing that there is support from the government makes me feel hopeful, not only for myself, but for all emerging artists and artists across the country.”
VAST Bhutan organised the National Art Award for the first time, with support from the Department of Media, Creative Industry and Intellectual Property under the Economic Stimulus Programme.
Sonam Deki, the programme manager of the VAST Bhutan said, “This is not just a competition; it is a strategic investment in nurturing and recognising our artists. We hope it becomes a prestigious award in the years to come and eventually leads to the establishment of a contemporary art museum. This initiative also pays tribute to His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, whose vision continues to inspire us.”
The organisers hope the award will grow into a lasting platform- one that values creativity, amplifies artistic voices, and allows art to continue thriving.
