In Samdrup Jongkhar, limited space at the vegetable market in Samdrupcholing Dungkhag is creating difficulties for daily vendors, with congestion becoming a growing concern. Vendors are asking for a proper market shed.

The current vegetable market in Samdrupcholing Drungkhag was originally designed for the Sunday vegetable market, where villagers gather to sell their produce once a week.

Around ten vendors now operate daily from the same space to meet the demand. However, the limited area is causing congestion and difficulties in managing their business.

Vendors say the lack of a permanent market affects both their sales and the convenience of customers.

They are now urging the concerned agencies to construct a proper vegetable market for those who sell produce daily.

“The space here is limited, and the vegetable vendors are unable to accommodate properly. We would be grateful if permanent vendors could be provided with a separate place,” said Tashi, Vegetable Vendor, Samdrupcholing Drungkhag.

“The vegetable market here does not have enough space. It can accommodate only about five vendors, but currently, nine vendors are operating from here,” said Tshering Zangmo, Vegetable Vendor, Samdrupcholing Drungkhag.

“There were two spaces meant for the Sunday vegetable market, and the Drungpa has provided one to permanent vegetable vendors. However, the space is still limited for us. We would be grateful if we could be given an additional space,” said Sangay Dema, Vegetable Vendor, Samdrupcholing Drungkhag.

While there are no immediate plans to build a new market, Phuentshothang Gup says the gewog is exploring options and seeking funds for construction.

He added that the gewog is also planning to hold a meeting with relevant agencies to consult on the construction plan.

In the meantime, vendors will have to continue operating from the limited space, managing congestion as best they can until a permanent solution is in place.
