The government has officially launched the Goods and Services Tax (GST), marking a major reform aimed at modernising the country’s tax system and strengthening revenue administration.
The new tax regime replaces multiple indirect taxes with a unified structure designed to simplify compliance, improve efficiency and broaden the tax base. Officials said GST will enhance transparency, reduce cascading taxes and create a more business-friendly environment by streamlining tax procedures.
At the launch event, senior government representatives highlighted that GST will be implemented in phases, with extensive awareness programmes and capacity-building initiatives to support businesses and taxpayers during the transition. Digital platforms have also been introduced to enable online registration, filing and payments, reducing paperwork and improving ease of doing business.
The government noted that GST is expected to improve revenue collection, support fiscal sustainability and provide the state with more predictable income to fund public services and development projects. Measures have been put in place to protect small businesses, including threshold exemptions and simplified compliance requirements.
Tax authorities have assured stakeholders that feedback will be continuously reviewed and that necessary adjustments will be made to ensure a smooth rollout.
The introduction of GST is seen as a key step in aligning the tax system with international best practices and supporting long-term economic growth.
