Bhutan’s Political Prisoners Suffer Illness and Death in Dire Conditions

Human rights groups have raised serious concerns over the treatment of political prisoners in Bhutan, following reports of severe illness and deaths in detention under harsh conditions. According to international rights organisations, detainees convicted on political grounds are being held in overcrowded prisons with limited access to adequate healthcare, proper nutrition, and family contact.
Recent reports indicate that at least one long-term political prisoner has died after prolonged illness, allegedly exacerbated by inadequate medical attention while in custody. Activists say several other detainees are suffering from chronic health conditions, including respiratory problems and untreated infections, raising fears of further loss of life if conditions do not improve.
Human Rights Watch and other advocacy groups have called on the Bhutanese authorities to urgently review the cases of political prisoners, ensure access to independent medical care, and improve detention conditions in line with international human rights standards. They have also urged the government to allow independent monitoring of prisons and to ensure that detainees are not punished for peacefully expressing political views.
The Bhutanese government has previously maintained that its prison system meets national legal standards and has rejected claims of systematic abuse. However, rights groups argue that the lack of transparency and independent oversight makes it difficult to verify official statements.
The issue has renewed international attention on Bhutan’s human rights record, particularly regarding freedom of expression and the treatment of government critics. Observers say meaningful reforms, including legal safeguards and humanitarian releases for seriously ill prisoners, are essential to prevent further tragedies and to uphold Bhutan’s commitments under international law.
