The Adani Group has officially commenced work on the 570 megawatt (MW) Wangchhu Hydropower Project in Bhutan, marking a significant milestone in the expanding energy partnership between Bhutan and India.
The project, located in western Bhutan, is being developed as part of the kingdom’s long-term strategy to harness its vast hydropower potential and strengthen its position as a major exporter of clean energy. Once completed, the Wangchhu project is expected to contribute substantially to Bhutan’s renewable energy capacity and support sustainable economic growth.
Speaking on the development, the Adani Group highlighted its commitment to building long-term partnerships with Bhutan rooted in sustainability, trust, and mutual development. The group noted that the project aligns with Bhutan’s national priorities of environmental conservation and low-carbon development, while also supporting regional energy security.
Hydropower remains a cornerstone of Bhutan’s economy, accounting for a major share of government revenue and export earnings, primarily through electricity sales to India. The Wangchhu project is expected to generate employment opportunities during construction and operation, while also contributing to infrastructure development in surrounding areas.
Officials said the project will be implemented in close coordination with Bhutanese authorities, ensuring adherence to environmental safeguards and social standards. Advanced engineering practices and modern technology will be used to minimise ecological impact while maximising efficiency.
The commencement of the Wangchhu Hydropower Project underscores the deepening economic and strategic cooperation between Bhutan and India, particularly in the renewable energy sector, and reinforces Bhutan’s role as a regional leader in clean and sustainable power generation.
