Motor vehicle accidents have been on the rise for four years. This is according to the latest police data. The police said mechanical failure, human error, poor road conditions and adverse weather contributed to the rise in accidents.
Last year recorded the highest number of accidents, with 1,450 cases.
The police recorded almost 1,120 cases in 2024, an increase of over 55 cases compared to 2023.
Meanwhile, 780 cases were reported in 2022.
Last year, Thimphu recorded the highest number of vehicular accidents at 370 cases. Following this, the Gelephu and Wangdue Phodrang divisions recorded high accident rates, with nearly 155 and 150 cases, respectively.
From all 14 divisions, Trongsa recorded the lowest with only 18 vehicular accidents last year.
Colonel Passang Dorji, Deputy Chief of Police of Crime Division said, “Once I am trained and have gone through the processes of tests and I get the license. I come to the field, and I drive the vehicle. I am a fully-fledged driver. My duty is to drive carefully and take responsibility so that I do not harm myself and, more importantly, I do not harm other road users.”
With accidents continuing to rise, the police are calling on motorists to take greater responsibility on the roads.
